Climate

Language

English is the official language, however a Creole is spoken which is somewhat has its roots from the English language and some African words. Other language spoken is Spanish also they are also different dialects spoken such as Maya and Garifuna.

Government

Belize is an independent country with a democratic elected parliament government and it is also a member of the British commonwealth. It received its independence in September 21, 1981.

Currencies and Rates

Local currency is the Belize dollar, US$1.00 dollar is equivalent to US$2.00 Belize dollars. Banks throughout the country include Atlantic, Belize, Heritage and Scotia Bank

Taxes

Hotel tax is nine percent (9%). General sale tax on goods and services is 12.5 percent (12%)

Airport Departure Fees

An airport departure fee of US$39.25 is required. This consist of a US$18.00 airport development fee, a US$15.00 passenger service fee, US$2.50 security fee and US$3.75 conservation fee, which is use to promote, enhance, and conserve Belize’s protected areas.

Entry Requirements

Passport: both adults and children require a valid passport for the duration of their stay, plus proof of return. Anyone traveling with an infant must provide proper documentation for the child, including a valid passport. A notarized letter stating that the parent has authorization to travel with the child outside must be presented at the entry point visas the following countries

Ports of Entry

Land borders are through the Northern border of Santa Elena and the Western border of Benque Viejo Del Carmen. Sea ports are located in Belize City, Big Creek, San Pedro, Dangriga, and Punta Gorda. Airport all international air crafts must clear through the only international airport in Ladyville, Belize which is the Phillip S.W. Goldson International Airport.

Tipping

Tipping is voluntary usually ten percent is acceptable with fifteen percent for exceptional services.In some cases a service charge may be added to your bill, this practice varies depending on the establishment.

Topography

Belize is an area of only 8,866 square miles. It is situated on the east coast of Central America, on the Caribbean sea Belize is bordered by and Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the south and west the second largest barrier reef in the world, 185 miles long. As well as three of the four coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere has the largest cave system in Central America.
